I have loved the Chalet School books for years, but only recently began writing in this fandom. One of my favourite things about the series is the vivid personalities of the staff--I love that they are characters in their own right and not just necessary scenery for a school story. It is the staff who feature most heavily in my drabbles.

My other favourite thing about the Chalet books is reading between the lines for the relationships between certain mistresses. Whilst I'm not averse to the odd Nell/Con drabble and even write them sometimes, my head canon is Nell/Hilda all the way, and they are my chief pairing.

Argh, this is just way too addictive! I intended to stop reading at a reasonable time, and now here I am in the middle of the night and my laptop has a flat battery.

There's so much I love about this drabble: the friendship between Kathy and Nell; the teasing and camaraderie of the staffroom; the idea of Ruth Derwent being cheerfully and shamelessly promiscuous (she's one of my favourite minor characters so it was lovely to see her developed here) ...and of course every single thing about Nell Wilson. Some of her sarcastic replies were brilliant, and it's great to see how well she walks that fine line between friend and boss. I'm reeeeaaaaallllly hoping that the fact Hilda was at St. Mildred's at 2am was a good thing for Nell! And that Hilda rings her every night just to say goodnight is adorable.

My other favourite thing is how well Kathy's bubbly personality and occasional self-doubt comes across--even with the anachronism of the internet in 1952, everyone and especially Kathy feels very much in character. Great writing, and I can't wait to read the sequel tomorrow! =)

Author's Response: Thank you! I apologise in advance that the sequel isn't yet finished, I do need to get on and get some more done! Thanks for the lovely review, I'm glad you enjoyed, and it means a lot you saying they are in character as I already feel from your drabbles posted that you have Nell and Hilda's characters done perfectly in your stories, we obviously agree on their personality types! :-)

Aww, this is brilliant! Felicity is so incredibly sweet. I love how she knocked out the real Father Christmas, and am very impressed at her remembering all the long words of Chas' theory. I also love how it's Chas trying to convince Steve that Father Christmas isn't real. And LOL at Jack's manly sack adjusting!

Summary: Sequel / Continuation of Kathy Ferrars joins a Social Network. Set in term directly after last one, so Excitements at the Chalet School. For Nell's Inbox readers, this is set a few years later than that, and there is only minor overlap, so if it is easier, think of them as different AUs.

Still loving this. Yay for more Hilda/Nell speculation, though you're driving me mad with all the unresolved hints! (I really think there must be something there though, because it occurred to me after I reviewed the prequel yesterday that either Hilda does feel something for Nell, or she's being uncharacteristically if unintentionally cruel with the goodnight phonecalls that are making Nell keep hoping. And I'm sure she would realise how cruel that would be if she felt nothing, so... *fingers firmly crossed*)

Characterisation is as brilliant as ever here, and Peggy and Ruth are still making me laugh so much. Best bit so far is definitely the Kathy's doctor conversation--I'm so glad I put my tea down right before Jack's "multiplying!" comment. Just fabulous! Looking forward to more if/when you continue. =)

Author's Response: Oh, my goodness, and you've read all this too. You're a very brave lady, Rietta!! I'm so pleased you enjoyed it, as I know Hilda is by way of being your favourite person in the books, too. I just love writing about them, hence the much longer Hilda's Revenge, which came after this. Two lots of revenge, actually. *winks*

Very much enjoying this so far! It's taken me all my willpower to stop reading here, but I must, because I have so much to do today. Definitely looking forward to returning to the rest later though! I absolutely adore how you capture the relationship between these two, and the banter between them is exquisite. I giggled insanely at the exchange about bookshops inside volcanoes, and in one or two other places. And I have to confess that it gives me a little thrill whenever I find parts like Nell's insatiable curiosity and think, "that's how I see Nell too!" Thank you for sharing this. I'll comment on the rest as and when I read =)

Author's Response: Thank you for reading and then sharing your views, Rietta. the banter seems to come naturally, because after writing about them for 11 years they speak for themselves. I know Nell doesn't come into ND much - though plays a very important art when she does - but they still speak for themselves.

I think this is a very distinct possibility, and very well-written. You have Nell and Hilda down perfectly, and even though Con is only present in a letter, her voice is totally consistent with A Good Year for the Roses (which I also loved, but was too lazy at the time to review.) Lovely drabble; thank you =)

This is utterly charming. The mice are adorable, and I love all the little things throughout like the lime green wool and the pictures signed PW and Wilhelmina being proud of Con. Also loved the links to help picture the story--the video was hilariously cute and very impressive. Altogether a lovely story, very well written--thank you.

The Later Years by Tom Rated: General starstarstarstarstar [Reviews - 34]
Summary: A look at the lives of various Chalet School characters in later years. Set ~ 30 years after Coming of Age, but with a little EBD-like stretching of the years, so rather than the mid 80s which would be technically correct, is set "Not quite now but not too long ago". Best way I can see to look at it is to use EBD's own method and lose a few years along the way with no explanation. You can choose which years you want to lose, personally I think a few from each decade will do it! Warning, the age of the characters does mean various ones have died and may die, or be seriously ill. That isn't the main focus of the drabble though.

Another thought-provoking, bittersweet chapter. I love how in tune Hilda and Nell are, but was sad to hear about the temporary split. I'm intrigued by the idea of Hilda becoming institutionalised; it's something I'd never even thought about, but it does make sense here. Definitely enjoyed how they began seeing the Platz in a new light once they retired, and I think their solution was a very sensible one. I'm looking forward to seeing them with Madge, and to their opinions on England. Thanks for sharing! =)
