It is early spring, and Con Stewart has announced her intention to marry Jock MacKenzie. Hilda Annersley takes Nell Wilson off on holiday to the Dolomites to distract her mind, and while staying in a hotel in a small valley beside a lake, a sudden death throws them and the entire hotel into confusion. Can they unravel the mystery before it unravels them - and can they save their souls before it is too late?

Kathryn (Beecharmer) challenged me about three years ago to write a Hilda/Nell drabble. They aren't actually a canon pairing in my head, but I said I'd have a go, and started this tale...which ran rapidly out of steam when I realised that the immensely intricate and clever plot I'd thought up for it had wandered out of my head, ostensibly to get a pint of milk, and had been gone for rather a long time. I waited for it, but it never did return, and it wasn't until Elennare prompted me with a comment over on SDL that I started thinking about it again.
I have, finally, thought of a decent plot - probably better than the one that has gone missing! - so I am resuming work on this in the hope that it won't require any research into anything at all, which is what is currently preventing work on my other two magnificent octopuses. I will be editing the first six chapters slightly to fit in with the new improved plotline, so I am reposting the whole thing rather than editing the old version.
Many thanks to Abi for letting me talk through the new ideas with her
In which we meet our doughty heroines...
In which a mysterious woman acts in a mysterious manner...
In which we meet some very suspicious characters...
Ok, going to try another post of this. If you're reading and enjoying, please do let me know, because it feels distinctly unloved at the moment and to be honest, Felix doesn't get out of bed for less than £50, so it's getting expensive to justify his continued presence! And as for Miss Brandon's italics...
Thank you very much for the jolly comments!
A small, spooky snippet for Halloween...
Thank you for the comments!
It was pointed out in an earlier chapter that I'd managed to give Nicholas the surname "Parson" without thinking of the much more famous Nicholas Parsons! I only wanted to give him a vaguely religious name, so I've changed it to Priestley - hope no-one minds
Now for my favourite chapter so far...
Thank you for the comments!
