What if Doris didn’t die and Mary Lou had to choose between her Mother and her career?

This is set at the end of the summer after Future.  In Wins the Trick, Roland Carey, father of Verity and stepfather to Mary Lou died leaving the pair and Doris alone.  Len and co discuss what is going to happen to Mary Lou, as Len believes it will mean the end of Mary Lou becoming an archaeologist.  Mary Lou returns to St Millie’s unsure what she’ll do and Joey invites them to come and stay for the summer.  This is set at the end of the summer

This is how it begins.

Painful memories have kept Karen away from the Tiernsee for many years but, after a difficult term, she returns there for the Easter holidays between Excitements and Coming of Age.  Were the events of the past really all they seemed, and will she yet find true happiness?

"I sneaked a glance at her as we passed under the pine trees. It was not yet properly dusk above us, and even down here it was still light enough that the girls walking ahead needed little more than a cursory eye kept on them; nonetheless, night came earlier in the valley and the trees blocked out a large portion of the natural light that did remain, and I was glad of the lanterns we carried. Nell's chestnut hair shone in their light, and her eyes, too, sparkled."
